Today’s announcement of the imminent withdrawal of cash services to the people of Athy by AIB shows scant regard for the customers who have been loyal to the bank through good times and bad.
We now call on AIB senior management to reverse their proposed cuts to banking services in the Athy branch.
The bank’s announcement that from September 30th 2022 the branch will no longer offer cash and cheque services at the counter, neither will they provide cash lodgement and withdrawal machines inside the branch, and the ATM cash machine outside the bank will also be removed.
From September, customers will no longer have access to notes, coins, cheques, foreign exchange or bank drafts at the Athy branch, customers will have to travel to Carlow or Portlaoise for these services.
The bank also proposes to remove drop safes and night safes, another blow to the commercial life and business premises of the town.
This decision by AIB will have a huge negative impact on the people of Athy, just as we are looking forward to the opening of a new road and the opportunity to regenerate the town and its commercial viability.
It is time AIB decision makers listened to their customers.
This decision, taken in a board room of faceless bureaucrats, must be reversed in the interest of our town and our people.
