Speaking in the Seanad on Thursday, Senator Mark Wall highlighted the extraordinary number of housing notice to quit cases he is dealing with at the moment.

Senator Wall commented “Cathaoirleach, I wanted to highlight a growing concern for me, with regard to the housing and rental market in my home county of Kildare. I’m Sure like other members in this house I get daily calls from those who are in desperate need of housing. However, the trend since January is very worrying in that the number of notices to quit calls that I am dealing with has increased alarmingly.
Normally you might get 1 or 2 a week or a fortnight at most but since the start of the year, I am getting many, many multiples of this. Well over 20 in the first two weeks of January.
I’m not sure what is behind this other than the usual selling the house etc, but it is creating a crisis that is very worrying in Kildare South and we need to seek urgent solutions.
I in my long time dealing with housing queries, I have never seen so many notices and there is simply no supply currently in South Kildare. I know, Leader there were calls in the run up to Christmas to have a discussion on housing with the Minister and I would ask for any update on this much needed debate. “
Speaking after the Seanad this morning, Senator Wall added “There is a crisis in the housing supply here in Kildare South. There needs to be an urgent review of vacant properties, how long they are taking to turn around and what is happening with the rental market in Kildare South.
